OBSERVATIONS OF A 14-YEAR-OLD BEAGLE

I’m always hungry and I’ll never pass up a chance to scrounge for something edible. And it doesn’t even have to be edible to get me to investigate.

But there are times there’s more important things on my mind besides food or drink.

Like today when my man owner was giving off a scent that had me jittery and worried. It wasn’t his usual smell that told me everything was alright. It was a smell of something wrong. I lick him a lot so I’m always the first to know when he’s not well.

I pestered him so much today he got mad at me and tried to push me away. He must have thought I was being selfish and wanted attention, but I was just trying to let him know I love him and maybe I could lick the badness from him with my very long tongue.

My lady owner was pestering him a lot, too. She brought him things and kept putting her arms around him and talking to him. I have a very limited vocabulary so I didn’t understand very much of what was said. But my instincts are excellent and I knew he was upset. Water dripped from his eyes. I knew he was even more upset than I get when my water dish is empty.

They both sat on the long fluffy chair and they held each other’s hands and the words God and Jesus were used a lot. I don’t know what those words mean but I hear them a lot and they are used in a tone that must mean good things.

My lady owner picked up a big book she always had and read from it and my man listened with his eyes closed.

I hopped up and snuggled between them on the long chair and got a good feeling from them that the words were helping.

He wasn’t as sad anymore and she was more relaxed than when she sat down and when they finished talking I got rubbed by both of them and it felt really good.

I feel better already and I stuck out my tongue and rolled onto my side as their hands massaged me.

I think I did some good here and I might even earn a biscuit or two.

That would be nice.
