LIFE & the WORD #63

Call me the World’s Greatest Knucklehead.

Because I chose a profession to serve and protect and most of the folks I’m assigned to help are in need of a toe tag and far beyond any protection one balding homicide Detective Pete Maxwell can provide.

I remember growing up if we played cowboys and Indians, I was always a cowboy. If we played soldiers, I was never the enemy and if we played cops and robbers…well, I must have enjoyed that the most because I became a cop.

I went from busting speeders to busting chops in domestic disputes, bar fights, and spending more time in court than on my beat. When I got promoted, I thought I’d finally be able to be the good guy.

Now, victims I see are not merely hurt, they go to basement rooms at  hospitals where no one wants to go for a treatment that will never bring them back. I’ve witnessed human misery at every inconceivable level.

I pray to God. I pray to God for it to stop. Every day and every night. I pray that God sets me on a path where I can truly serve and protect.

Until then, I’ll have to be content to ask for God’s help to put these scumbag perps away where they can’t repeat their crimes.

I thank God I’m good at that.

the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished.”
