It was a warm spring day in 1835 and Charles Darwin was captivated by the awe and wonder on this, his fourth Galapagos Island in five days. The unique species of this terrain had him feverishly taking notes until he could no longer write.
Presently, his attention was commanded by the antics of a blue-footed, yellow eyed bird, a Booby, that stood not a yard tall with a wingspan of less than five feet.
At once, the bird emitted a comical grunt followed by a kind of whistle and clumsily dashed away to reveal a more magnificent sight behind to its watcher.
An angel appeared to Darwin in the flames of a burning bush. Darwin was truly amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say: “I am the God of your Fathers.”
Darwin, a Christian and a frequent Bible quoter to the other men aboard the HMS Beagle, was overcome and fell to his knees.
“You have been chosen,” the Lord said.
“Why have I been chosen?” Charles asked. “I am but a failed medical scholar with a passion for natural…”
“Silence,” the Lord spoke. “I granted you superior intellect for a reason that will become clear to you later in your life.”
“What would you have me do, Father?”
“You will deny my existence to the world.”
Gasping for breath, Charles replied, “How could I deny you exist when you are here before me now?”
“You will be a test of faith for your fellow men, Your travels, the knowledge you acquire will make you an expert in your field and the things you write will be widely accepted as a triumph for science over religion,” the Lord said.
“I don’t understand why you’d have me do this blaspheming.”
“You will convince others that man evolved from an animal, a primate, even though you know this is not possible.”
“I have my faith I will not relinquish.”
“You must,” the Lord said. “Science is not based on faith.”
“I will doom my own soul in this bargain,” Darwin cried out.
“You will not. When your days here are done, you will be with me in the kingdom of heaven. I need you to strongly test others faith in me as I have asked others before you and still more to come. You will conceal these untruths in your scripts of wisdom.”
Darwin hung his head in despair and said, “I will do as you ask, my Father.”

Darwin struggled daily and it was almost thirty years before he kept his promise to the Lord in his Theory of Evolution.
He would eventually write in his autobiography:
“I gradually came to disbelieve in Christianity as a divine revelation. The mystery of the beginning of all things is insoluble to us; and I for one must be content to remain an Agnostic.”
Darwin convinced many that failed the Lord’s test but he himself trusted the Lord to fulfill his promise to Charles despite the fictions he misrepresented as facts.
Interesting twist, but I have the feeling the Devil made him do it.
I definitely knew about much of this, but that being said, I still believed it was valuable. Good work!
Thanks for a worthwhile story!
Excellent story and I could see this happening…the devil pretending to be God to use Darwin for his own evil purposes. Entertaining and thought provoking. Thank you.
