CLOSE YOUR EYES

CLOSE YOUR EYES

Five-year-old Tommy was a good boy but had difficulty falling asleep unless his Mom told him a bedtime story.

“Now close your eyes,” Krissie said after tucking her son beneath his cozy covers. “I want to tell you a story about a little boy that made God smile.”

He closed his eyes tightly.

While she usually read from a book, she liked it when she didn’t have to read and could maintain eye contact with him through all her nuances and inflections and watch him reveal his emotions as she spoke.

“There was a little boy named Tommy,” she began.

His eyes flipped open. “Is it about me?” he asked excitedly.

“Could be,” his Mom said. “Close your eyes again. Now this little Tommy never complained when he had to do chores around the house to help his Mom and Dad. And that made God smile.”

Tommy grinned. She liked to see his face register surprise and loved when his smile ignited her heart.

“This little Tommy never got mad when he didn’t get the new toy he really wanted and was happy playing with his old toys and that made God smile. He knew his Mom and Dad loved him more than all the chocolate chip cookies in the world and Tommy loved them just as much. And that made God smile.”

Tommy squinted and peeked at his Mom, who laughed, because he was not very good at being sneaky.

“I see you peeking,” she chuckled. “Close your eyes again and think about something that would make God smile. Like when we thank him for our blessings before we eat and when we pray to him and ask him to watch over us and the people we love.”

“How can you see God smile?” Tommy asked without opening his eyes.

“I can see God with my heart and one day you will be able to see him too,” his Mom said.

She watched him clench his eyes even tighter.

“I think I see God and he’s smiling at me,” Tommy exclaimed as he opened his eyes.

He saw his Mom was smiling and her eyes were closed.
